Is James Gunn Done with Movies?

James Gunn has been incredibly busy the last few years. When not working with Marvel Studios on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, Gunn has been enjoying directing another comic- book movie, set in the DC Universe. Gunn’s upcoming project, The Suicide Squad, is due out later this year and features an immense cast.

One character being introduced in The Suicide Squad is the Peacemaker, played by John Cena. This vigilante will not be unfamiliar to DC fans and an upcoming HBO Max show has been devoted to him. Gunn’s even nabbed the role of writer on the upcoming show. While he didn’t explain why, the filmmaker did say that working on Peacemaker has made him consider leaving the big screen and working solely in television.

This might be shocking to many fans of Gunn’s work, as the writer/director is quite well-known for his wide range of films, covering nearly every genre. However, it’s not uncommon for filmmakers to work on a television project and decide to stay in the small screen business. Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name), Jordan Peele (Get Out), and J.J. Abrams (Star Trek – 2009) have all dabbled in television. If Gunn does leave the movies behind, he’ll be in good company

Still, it would be a pretty interesting career move to see Gunn move on from an industry that helped establish him. TV shows generally allow for writers to explore character development more, so based on Gunn’s many past projects, that prospect would likely be very enticing.

Gunn isn’t leaving the silver screen just yet, however, as he’s still working on the – possibly final – Guardians of the Galaxy film, as well as the upcoming Wile E. Coyote movie. It really wouldn’t be surprising though if Gunn stays in the TV realm of Hollywood. After working on Peacemaker, Gunn said,

I love doing Peacemaker. I could see just making TV shows after Guardians 3. It’s a possibility.

Wherever Gunn’s next project takes him, his fans will surely follow. At the very least, his upcoming projects have put hope on the horizon for many DC fanatics. We anticipate seeing many exciting James Gunn projects in the future.

The Suicide Squad will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
