The Suicide Squad is ramping up to be one of DC’s most anticipated films. While director James Gunn has said that there will be several villains featured in this summer’s biggest blockbuster, a key one has left some fans astounded.

First revealed in the initial teaser trailer (see our rundown here), that villain is none other than Starro the Conqueror. This is a semi-aquatic giant starfish, who’s being introduced to the DC film universe for the first time. The villainous kaiju will face off against our favorite anti-heroes for very specific reasons.

When asked about the inclusion of this amusing creature, Gunn had this to say,

Starro is hilarious because he’s ridiculous. He’s a giant, cerulean blue starfish, but he’s also fucking terrifying. When I was a kid I thought that was the scariest thing of all time… and I think that exemplifies what this movie is: it is ridiculous and it’s also terrifying, and serious. So he works really well as the villain of the movie—as one of the villains, actually.

Despite Gunn being given permission to kill just about any character he wants, humor is sure to be a key point of the film. Most superhero movies tend to take the darker route, so why shouldn’t one about heroic bad guys go in the opposite direction? Starro is sure to bring a balance between the monstrous and comedic elements we expect to see in the flick (alongside the plentiful F-bombs and adult jokes).

Additionally, monsters are back in style in film (i.e. Godzilla vs. Kong), so adding in a kaiju to an already star-packed movie will send it over the top.

Starro might not have been the most anticipated villain in The Suicide Squad, however, it’s certainly shaping up to be everyone’s favorite baddie of the DCU.

The Suicide Squad will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
