Look, any other day of the year, we’d love Batman to take the stage. Since it’s Batman Day, DC and fans get to have a little fun.
Straight out of San Diego Comic-Con 2026’s Gotham panel comes Batman of Two Worlds. It will be a one-shot that’s less about bringing two Dark Knights face-to-face and more about holding them up side-by-side, like comic book trading cards come to life. Dropping September 19, just in time for this year’s Batman Day celebrations, and it’s strictly a comic shop exclusive.
No digital. No big box stores. Just pure, paper-and-ink Bat-goodness for the die-hard fans.
Two Stories, One Mystery, Zero Hand-Holding
Here’s the kicker: the two Batmen never actually meet. DC’s making that crystal clear. Instead, this one-shot gives us two parallel tales, each following a different Bruce Wayne as they tackle essentially the same mystery across their respective universes. Same question, totally different answer keys.
The mainline Batman story comes from the current Batman series writer Matt Fraction, with art by Javier Fernández. Over on the Absolute side, it’s regular Absolute Batman creative team Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta handling the heavy lifting. And if the creative teams alone don’t get your pulse racing, the concept certainly will.
Snyder on Absolute Batman: “He’s a Juggernaut”
Speaking at the SDCC panel, Snyder described the Absolute take as something of a force of nature. If this Batman needs to get into a bank, he sure is not picking the lock. But here’s the twist Snyder’s most excited about: it’s not just about the takedown. It’s about exposing the real criminals pulling the strings from the shadows, forcing the powerful to answer for their sins. “He’s kind of a juggernaut,” Snyder said with a grin. And honestly? That tracks.
Fraction’s Batman, by contrast, leans into a quieter kind of brilliance. As Fraction put it, the question isn’t if Batman solves the problem, but how. Fraction shares:
It feels like Batman is having such a moment, the chance to do this book and have the two takes exist on the same cover… was such a joy.
Every Batman story, he says, demands you get a little smarter just to keep up with him. That’s the challenge. That’s why we love Batman so much, we see his journey, evolving himself each time. Maybe we pick up something from this and maybe we don’t, but it’s always a joy to join the ride.
Same Broken Kid, Two Very Different Grown-Ups
For all their surface-level differences: the brute force of Absolute Bats, the calculated precision of the original; both writers kept circling back to the same emotional core. As Snyder put it, at his heart, Bruce is still just a traumatized kid who chose to build something better out of the wreckage instead of letting the darkness swallow him whole. Snyder shares:
The fun was showing how each one is special and how they both have the same heart.
Fraction echoed that sentiment, calling the chance to have both versions exist on the same cover. A stunning juxtaposition, especially at a moment when Batman feels bigger than ever.
“We tried to make something that can invite you in,” Snyder added. “You don’t have to know anything about Batman.”
And honestly? That’s the magic of a good Batman Day story. Whether you’ve been reading for decades or you’re just curious about the guy in the cowl, Batman of Two Worlds sounds like it’s ready to welcome you home.
