Welcome to the first installment of DKN Remembers. With the holiday week coming to a close and Batman news being a bit slow, I thought I would look back on my favorite Christmas movie – Batman Returns!
I remember Tim Burton’s second outing featuring the Dark Knight rather fondly. Like many, I got swept up in the marketing maelstrom and still have many pieces of memorabilia from this film as well as action figures to this day. Yes, that includes Happy Meal toys. The film’s dark and sexy motifs didn’t stop me from collecting them no matter what McDonald’s and parents groups thought.
Some remember Batman Returns favorably and others found it a bit weird for their own sensibilities. Regardless, I feel it carved its own niche in Batman’s big screen legacy and is unique both visually and tonally. Michael Keaton had another solid outing as Batman, Michelle Pfeiffer remains the favorite Catwoman of many, and Danny DeVito portrayed a remarkably different incarnation of the Penguin, love it or hate it. Oh yeah, this guy named Christopher Walken put in an appearance as well. I’d also be remiss if I failed to mention Danny Elfman’s stellar score; I believe it’s possibly better than that of the first film.
Feel free to journey back in time and check out the theatrical trailer at the top of this article. Perhaps it will inspire you to revisit the movie before the year ends if you haven’t already. Please feel free to tell us what Batman Returns means to you.
