Joss Whedon quit the Batgirl movie in late February, leaving many fans wondering why. This set back the production, and although Warner Bros. have a writer working on the script, they’ve yet to find a replacement director.

Whilst at a premier for Marvel’s Avenger’s: Infinity Wars, Whedon spoke to Variety about his reasoning for leaving the production.

Whedon’s Word

Whedon said:

“It had been a year since I first pitched the story. A lot happened this year. The story kind of just crumbled in my hands. There were elements that I just hadn’t mastered that, after a long time, felt like I wasn’t going to. I told people that I didn’t have an idea, which isn’t an exact truth. I had an idea, but it didn’t fit in the space that was left for it.”

It seems the story he had originally submitted didn’t seem like it was going to work anymore. Apparently, in the year since he pitched the idea, things happened that changed the trajectory of Batgirl enough that Whedon didn’t feel like his idea would work anymore. He goes on to state that he was really excited to be working on the project and wasn’t happy to be leaving it. He then provides an update on his prospects, that he is working on a project of his own that he is very excited for.

Regardless of what has happened with the production, Batgirl is one of DC’s upcoming movie titles that has fans all in a tizz. The fact that they are taking their time and trying to get the right creative direction indicates a lot of care. Should DC and Warner Bros. handle this film well, I feel they could win a lot of fans’ hearts with this beloved character.
