Catwoman #15 keeps up everything that’s been masterfully built on by the new creative team. Jones is missed, but Ram V has taken this title in his own, successful, direction. The big truth of who Catwoman is, and her overall attitude to how she handles things, is consistent. It’d be awful if it wasn’t. We get the roaring redemption story of Catwoman overcoming how she’s been targeted, and she handles it in the best, and most Selina-like way possible. Head on.
Dynamic, punchy artwork makes up the majority of issue #15. The line work is dark and stands out. The colors pop. In this style, characters are clear and beautiful. It’s the most comicbook-y, I’d say the title has looked in a very long time.
Catwoman isn’t the kind of character to wait for anything… quite the opposite. In this issue, as in the previous, she goes directly to the source of her problems. A reader really has to respect that kind of tenacity. Selina gets things done and that’s why we love her.
A truly ambitious moment in this issue was the callback to Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One. I won’t reveal when in it happens, or how. I’ll leave it as a nice surprise for you to see which moment it was mirroring. Batman stories have surrounded me for as long as I can remember, but even I didn’t expect to see a classic piece of comic imagery shown off like this. Great, defining titles like Year One show how big the swashes of story we have access to are. It’s most noteworthy for us readers to see Ram V call back to classic stories like this. We should have as much faith as they have in Catwoman going ahead.
Conclusion
We can really expect anything from Catwoman these days. The threats and loose ends of Jones’ run have been nicely tidied up, leaving readers ready for more at Selina’s side.
