Batman: Knightfall premiered at the Annecy Animation Festival to overwhelmingly high praise.

The animated adaptation stars Anson Mount as Batman. Mount also is Captain Chris Pike on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Black Bolt in the much-maligned Inhumans show.  Additionally, Michael Mando is the voice of Bane, as well as play the live-action version of Scorpion on the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Finally rounding out the main cast is Pablo Schreiber as Jean-Paul Valley, aka Azrael. Schrieber also previously played Master Chief in the Halo streaming show.

In a nice surprise addition to the cast, the movie confirmed that the Robin in the movie is Tim Drake. However, it is unclear who the voice actor.

The film is animated by South Korean Studio Mir Co. which also animated X-Men ‘97, My Adventures With Superman, and Legend of Korra. Jeff Wamester directed and Green Lantern comic book writer Jeremy Adams wrote the screenplay for Knightfall.

‘This is one of the best’

After showing the entirety of the movie at the Festival crowd,  Executive VP Warner Bros. Animation Peter Girardi came out to discuss the creative process of the movie.

He talked about the massive impact the original Knightfall storyline had on superhero comics. This huge scale is the reason why they wanted to use three animated features to fully adapt the story.

“You all know this is a very important story in the Batman mythology. It is so big and it was so consequential to the Batman story that it takes place over three films. So this is a trilogy of films. All animated.”

Girardi also felt pretty enthused by the crowds reactions. He went on to say how much faith he has in the movie.

“We’ve done a lot of DC animated films based on the published material. This is one of the best. This is but the first part of a trilogy, but if the crowd reactions are anything to go by, DC may have a winner on their hands.”

No specific release date yet, but Batman: Knightfall Part 1 is expected to come out sometime in late 2026.
