Detective Comics #1096 is the climactic conclusion to Tom Taylor’s first arc! And it is a wild ride! Let’s swoop in….
Scent of a Villain
Since Tom Taylor took over this title, after a resoundingly successful, universally loved Nightwing run, expectations were high. I think after this issue, some fans will say job well done, some fans will still be on the fence, and others may be disappointed. I myself, upon reflection, really enjoyed it. At first I felt slightly slightly sliiiiightly underwhelmed, but after letting it marinate in my head, it had everything I wanted, and a glimpse at what’s next.
What’s Next?
With the first run now complete it leaves me asking what’s next? As ongoing books so rarely get to have a complete story or two without an event book interrupting it leads me to think back to Tom King’s Batman over a hundred issues, each arc adding to the greater story and narrative but also feeling contained to the 6 or so issues in the self contained volume. This was the gold standard.
Will Taylor be given the same grace and freedom? Or will a Justice League crisis cause a disruption? Will Taylor move on to another title and leave this book as a short and sweet appearance. I don’t know, but deep down in my fanboy heart, I hope he and the wonderfully talented Mikel Janin, get as long as they need on this title to tell a beautiful long story, that will go down as one of the best.
Conclusion
Detective Comics #1096 is the end and the beginning. It left me satisfied yet wanting more. Hopeful for things to come!
