DC Comics revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that they have cast Minnie Driver (Tarzan, Good Will Hunting) as their gender-swapped Penguin in Batman: Caped Crusader, where the first episode of the animated series was also specially premiered to DCC attendees.
Driver joins Hamish Linklater (The Crazy Ones, The New Adventures of Old Christine) who will voice the Dark Knight himself, and Jamie Chung (Big Hero 6, Dragonball Evolution) who voices Harley Quinn. As well as Batman’s allies, Jason Watkins as Alfred Pennyworth, Eric Morgan Stuart as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Krystal Joy Brown as Barbara Gordon, Michelle C. Bonilla as Renee Montoya, and Bumper Robinson as Lucius Fox. Executive producer Bruce Timm told IGN in a cover story:
You might think that we’re changing something just to change it. But it was never about that; it was more about where will it lead us? Will it lead us to do something new?
In this noir-infused reimagining of Gotham City, Oswalda Cobblepot runs a criminal enterprise from her cruise ship, Iceberg Lounge, in the waters of the city. Batman, in his early vigilante days of crime-fighting, teams up with the Gotham City Police Department and City Hall to put a stop to his villain.
All ten episodes of Batman: Caped Crusader is set to release on Prime Video on August the 1st. You can watch the first trailer for the series here. Let us know in the comments what your thoughts are about this new change.
