DC has announced a sequel mini-series to Batman ’89, Batman: Echoes, that will showcase The Scarecrow as the main villain.
Writer Sam Hamm and artist Joe Quinones will return as the creative team. Hamm is of course the original screenwriter for Tim Burton’s Batman. Quinones is a huge Michael Keaton Batman fan and prolific comic book artist. Most recently, he made concept art for the film The Flash- specifically Batman’s alternate costumes.

Not much has been revealed about the story yet, other than the synopsis released by DC Comics.
You wanna get nuts? Let’s get nuts! After Harvey Dent’s crusade against Gotham and Batman, the Caped Crusader has disappeared without a trace. In his place, ordinary citizens have take to the streets to root out crime. As innocents get hurt, the question on everyone’s mind is the same: Where is Batman? Sam Hamm, screenwriter of the1989 Batman movie, and Joe Quinones reunite for another tale in Gotham!
So it seems that Batman has semi-retired after the first series, but Gotham has turned into a vigilante state. How does Scarecrow fit in? Echoes cover art also hints that Arkham Asylum will figure into this. Shockingly, Tim Burton never used Arkham Asylum in his films, despite its gothic setting being perfect for the director’s style. How will Arkham be used in this?
Another tantalizing tease in the cover image shows the lower half of a smiling, Joker-esque female face. Is this the Burton-verse version of Harley Quinn? According to rumors, Scarecrow and Harley Quinn were to be the villains in Burton’s third film. The cover seems to be echoing (ha!) similar story beats as the now-canceled film.
Batman: Echoes New Re-Designs
In conjunction with the announcement of Echoes, Quinones gave a sneak peek at his re-designs for Batman and Scarecrow. It looks like Batman’s armor will look like a slightly modified design from The Flash. The Scarecrow’s design seems like a cross-pollination of various looks. Some inspiration is taken from the various Batman: The Animated Series Scarecrow, including a noose around the neck, like in The New Adventures.
Batman: Echoes will hit comic book shops sometime in November 2023.
