The Batman suit that George Clooney wore in Batman and Robin is going up for auction, starting at $40,000.
The infamous suit is notable for having something that most other Bat-suits didn’t have previously: nipples. Yes, it is the Bat-suit that everyone talks about when they think of Clooney as Batman. Now, collectible auction house Heritage Auction has started the bidding for the suit on July 22 and 23rd.
What’s most amusing is how even Heritage House is aware of the notoriety that the Bat-suit and its accompanying nipples and codpiece garner. Heritage Auction’s executive vice president Joe Maddalena wrote in a statement:
This is easily the most famous – and infamous – Batman costume ever designed, as evidenced by the fact that all these years later, it continues to make headlines every time Tim Burton and George Clooney get asked about it.
To his credit, Joel Schumacher never apologized for the ‘Bat-nipples.’ In fact, he once told Vice, “I’m still glad we did it.” I’m just as glad we have the chance now to offer this piece of cinema history to someone who can appreciate the costume as much as Schumacher clearly did.
However, with a starting bid of $40K, this suit is for the serious collector. Or, if not that, then someone who’s really into Batman and Robin. If you are considering the purchase, please don’t think you can win the suit by bidding one dollar more than the previous bidder, a la The Price is Right. The next minimum bid is $41K. Then again, at that point, you should really consider whether those bat-nipples are worth the price of a new moderate-size sedan? Sure the suit would make a great conversation piece at a party, but will it grant you true happiness?
You can contemplate your life choices as you make your bid here. C’mon, you know you want to.
