It’s the news that everyone has heard, but as the ink still dries on the deal that will have Ben Affleck donning the cowl, many of the details in the contract remain a mystery, but have begun to emerge.
It’s true poor Ben can’t catch a break, as he has become the source for many of the internet’s jokes. Yet when you dig through millions of memes you come upon interesting morsels of information that seem to be trickling out. Word of a multi-picture deal seems to have gotten out, an idea that seems like a no-brainer if Warner Bros. truly seeks to create a Marvel-esque shared universe for DC, but what’s more interesting is the idea that Ben Affleck may take a piece of that universe for himself.
Affleck would not take on this role unless he had some say in how this script turns out. He will have a strong hand at Warner Bros., which backed him on “The Town” and the Oscar-winning “Argo” and is invested in telling the town he’s sticking around the studio. Affleck signed for multiple pictures. If this works out he’ll have a major franchise to play with for years ahead. And a major studio where he can hang his hat, as his hero Clint Eastwood has done for decades.
What this could mean is a world where Affleck not only stars, but also directs and co-writes the eventual Batman relaunch. Now with all the recent hate he’s been getting the thought of this alone might drive some Bat-fans insane, but don’t be so quick to dismiss it. As many people have pointed out Affleck tends to give great performances in his own movies, films which many consider to have been smarter than average studio fare.
Just imagine a more crime drama, detective style approach to Batman, something many fans have been clamoring for, I think Ben Affleck could very well be the man to give it to us. Of course, this all hinges on succeeding in 2015, but it’s interesting to see wheels in motion. What (besides a different actor in the bat suit) would you like to see when they restart the Batman movies?
