Warner Bros. Animation announced they will make multi-part movies based on the Knightfall storyline.
This reveal was made at New York Comic Con this past weekend. Knightfall is the famous storyline where Bane destroys Arkham Asylum, forcing Batman to push himself to the limits as he hunts down all of the escaped criminals. This climaxes to when a weary Batman confronts Bane and Bane breaks Batman’s back.
It is said to be one of the most iconic Batman storylines of all time. The Dark Knight Rises even adapted the infamous Batman back break scene.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall will be released sometime in 2026. Jeff Wamester will direct the movie, with current Green Lantern writer Jeremy Adams providing the script. Rick Morales is the Supervising Producer, as well as Producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau. Batman movie veterans Sam Register and Michael Uslan are the Executive Producers.
How Many Movies will Adapt ‘Knightfall’?
Based on the official synopsis, the first installment of Knightfall seems to cover the part until his confrontation with Bane.
“When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”
This raises the question of how many parts will this adaptation last? The original comic book epic spanned a few years within the Batman titles, as well as a few of its ancillary spin-offs, like Catwoman and Robin. It is typically divided into three parts: Knightfall, Knightquest, and Knightsend. Knightquest follows the immediate aftermath of Bruce Wayne’s broken back and handing the Batman mantle to then-newbie superhero Azrael. Then, Knightsend chronicles Bruce Wayne needing to retake the mantle back from an increasingly-unhinged Azrael.
Will the animated features follow a similar format and make a trilogy of movies? Or will they try to jam all of Azrael’s plot into the part two movie? That is essentially what they did when they adapted animated features for the similarly-structured comic storyline Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen. Even further back, Warner Bros’ first animated movie was Superman: Dooomsday where it condensed the death of Superman, funeral of Superman, the rise of a fake evil Superman, and then return of Superman into one 75 minute feature. So crazier stuff has happened before with Warner Bros Animation’s comic book adaptations.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall will be released in an unspecified date in 2026.
