In a collection of behind-the-scenes photographs for the canceled Batgirl movie, recently shared by the actress Leslie Grace, it looks like we all missed out on seeing the iconic 1989 Batmobile returning to the big screen, before The Flash.
Shared to Twitter by ‘Batman Film News’, the pictures have since been taken down for copyright purposes. In them, we see more of the Gotham that Barbra Gordon was trying to protect. In one image, we see Leslie Grace’s Batgirl sitting in front of a sewing machine in what appears to be a church tower. In another, we see three screens showing us different angles of Michael Keaton’s return as Batman as he walks through what could be the Belfry. In the last, the Bats are together in one of Gotham’s many derelict alleys, with Tim Burton’s iconic 1989 Batman iconic Batmobile that we all love, waiting to be taken for a ride.
Posted separately on Instagram, co-director Adil El Arbi, who helmed the film alongside Bilall Fallah, shared a new image of production. In it, Arbi stands between the Bats who stand face-to-face. Arbi is holding a travel mug and it looks like Keaton is smiling, so it’s most likely a moment caught between takes. When the cancellation was first announced, the directors said:
We are saddened and shocked by the news. Our amazing cast and crew did a tremendous job and worked so hard to bring Batgirl to life. We are forever grateful to have been part of that team. It was a dream to work with such fantastic actors like Michael Keaton, JK Simmons, Brendan Fraser, Jacob Scipio, Corey Johnson, Rebecca Front and especially the great Leslie Grace, who portrayed Batgirl with so much passion, dedication and humanity. In any case, as huge fans of Batman since we were little kids, it was a privilege and even an honor to have been part of the DCEU, even if it was for a brief moment. Batgirl for life.
Although there was a lot of excitement for the Batgirl film, which had been due to release this year, it was canceled late in 2022 just before James Gunn and Peter Safran joined DC Studios and many more things were cut from production. Safran said:
On the Batgirl front… I saw the movie, and there are a lot of incredibly talented people in front of and behind the camera on that film, but that film was not releasable, and it happens sometimes. That film was not releasable.
It is a shame that we will not get to see anything more than the trailer for the canceled Batgirl movie, and maybe some more peaks behind-the-scenes like this. But that doesn’t mean we won’t ever see Grace don the cowl.
She has said:
We’ve definitely had conversations about Batgirl’s future and how Batgirl can make a resurgence,” the actor said. “I think fans are looking forward to seeing that. We’ll just see where that takes us; I can’t say one way or the other if that is a reality at this point.
