Todd McFarlane has released pre-order details for the McFarlane Toys Batwing, as will be featured in the upcoming The Flash movie – and even Todd McFarlane himself is struggling to wield this bad boy in his promotional video!
Of course we were beyond excited for The Flash movie when that trailer dropped confirming the Flashpoint era of multiverse hopping. James Gunn only went and ramped up the importance of the movie by explaining that it will be the springboard for his Gods And Monsters plan for the DCEU.
Here at DKN we’re always looking for the Bat-centric perspective on all DCU news stories and of course, The Flash has a corker with the appearance of two movie versions of The Dark Knight. While we’re used to seeing the Ben Affleck cast version of Bruce Wayne that first made an appearance in Zack Snyder’s Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), it was the arrival of Michael Keaton’s 1989 version of Batman in the trailer that got Bat-fans talking.
Tim Burton’s adaptation came with some interpretations that, even thirty years later, still feel like benchmark creations. The soundtrack, the suit, the Batmobile, the gadgets, and most certainly the Batwing. Surely one of the most famous, spine-tingling moments from the movie is when the aircraft ascends through the night sky, clearing a line of clouds and rising just high enough to fill the moon, holding the apex just long enough for us to appreciate this version of the Bat-symbol, before dropping back down.
The Flash Movie McFarlane Toys Batwing
So, the big question has been whether the new movie will keep any of the initial designs and how much, if anything with be changed. As is often the case, we can look to McFarlane Toys for the inside information as they have been releasing pre-order details of toys and statues from the movie. And now we have the big one. Literally.
The new Batwing has a huge 35-inch wingspan which means it can seat a 7-inch scale DC Multiverse figure (sold separately). If you check out the new video of Todd McFarlane (above) you’ll see him moving round in his chair as he turns the vehicle round. The size enables us to appreciate the design. The shape is a little less filled with curves and contours compared with the 1989 version. It has a more streamlined Bat-symbol profile, closer to the versions we often see in the comics, so it’s maybe more practical-looking.
It’s also grey rather than black. Again, maybe a little more real-world-feeling, like a fighter jet, particularly as the paint job looks a little scuffed. It’s worth noting that the description of the model reveals that in The Flash, Batman has been called out of retirement so maybe it makes sense that the Batwing looks as if it hasn’t been used in a while.
It feels larger in comparison to the pilot too, than the ’89 version. Talking of the cockpit, notice the clear panel where the pilot’s feet go? Want to start speculating on what that’s about? Plus, while the model features retractable landing gear, boosters and a push-button opening cockpit, there’s no sign of the machine guns or the pincer that collects the Joker’s poisonous balloons in the original film. If it has extra gadgets, I guess we have to wait a little longer on that reveal.
What’s really cool is that, as McFarlane explains in the video, the Bat-symbol stand can be mounted on the wall, so you can turn you Batwing into wall art. That’s a great, unique selling point.
