Absolute Batman artists Nick Dragotta and Daniel Warren Johnson have elevated to comic book super stardom due to the massive success of the Absolute line.
A New Wave of Comic Artist Celebrities
The overwhelming response for Absolute Batman drove not only high sales number, but also elevated Dragotta and Warren Johnson to celebrities. This is also a part of a wave of excitement for comic book artists again. This level of enthusiasm has not been seen since the early 1990’s Image era of artists like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, and Erik Larsen.
Except now the new wave of comic artist super stars have more idiosyncratic styles. Other current ultra-popular artists include Batman‘s main artist Jorge Jimenez, Absolute Wonder Woman‘s Hayden Sherman, and Ultimate X-Men’s Peach Momoko.

However, Dragotta and Warren Johnson’s popularity seem to overshadow the other artists. There are reports of hours-long lines for signings like at Oakland’s Cape and Cowl Comics or at conventions.
Nick Dragotta on the Mind-Blowing Success of ‘Absolute Batman’
Another indicator of their success is the original art market, which has recently had a boom for Dragotta’s Absolute Batman original pages.
For example, Dragotta’s cover for Absolute Batman #1 sold for $70,000 in 2024. It is rare for a piece of modern original art to go so much. These kinds of prices are usually seen in classic vintage comics from the Silver or Golden Age.
Nick Dragotta confessed what pulled him into Absolute Batman is the tweak to the Dark Knight’s origin story. Now, Thomas Wayne is not gunned down in an alley but in a school shooting.
“The real hook was when [Scott Snyder] said, ‘Bruce’s parents will die in a school shooting,’ And I was like, ‘You really going there?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah.’”
Daniel Warren Johnson already made a big name for himself with the reboot of the Transformers comic book line. However, he made a massive splash with last year’s Absolute Batman Annual #1. The annual was hailed by Dark Knight News as one of the best single-issue comics in 2025. And we are not alone in that sentiment.

The comic sold an eye-popping 150,000 copies in its first printing. It went through a 2nd printing and is now onto its 3rd printing soon.
