Back in September, news broke that James Gunn was working on a spinoff series for John Cena’s Peacemaker character. Apparently, Warner Bros. execs were so impressed with Cena that they greenlit an eight-episode series for HBO Max, written by Gunn. The official The Suicide Squad trailer eventually showed us just how hysterical Cena can be. Since then, it seems that the wrestler turned actor is riding high on his first DC superhero role, so much so that he wears the Peacemaker uniform even when he’s not on set. He’s so attached to the character that he took the uniform home to “nap in it,” according to Gunn.
First of all, let me preface the article by explaining that I’ve never been a big fan of John Cena. By the time Cena had reached his peak in WWE, I’d moved away professional wrestling and would quite often roll my eyes and cringe at his gimmick. However, I’ve since softened to him because he genuinely seems like a nice guy, and most recently, I’ve discovered that he’s got a great sense of humor.
“He loves peace and he’s willing to kill to get it.”
Cena has even been seen conducting interviews in his Peacemaker uniform, most notably his Late Show appearance with Stephen Colbert:
It’s become so much of a meme online that Gunn has been seen laughing about it on Twitter. He seems just as tickled and perplexed by Cena’s attachment to the costume as much as the Internet is. Cena quickly explained not only is it comfortable, but it also looks good. Whether he meant it ironically, or not, is up to you to decide.
Well, it’s made of an overly comfy cotton blend. Its colors are very subdued avant garde mixed into an unpretentious nouveau riche statement that screams “which way to liberty beach?! #fashion https://t.co/HBvBt3jAvB

Gunn would later continue the thread by providing a hysterical anecdote about how Cena wanted to take the suit home to “nap in it.”
I’m not kidding, @JohnCena just took a uniform home from set because he said he wanted to see what it was like taking a nap in it. https://t.co/dO1kBMO47X

“Which way to liberty beach?”
It seems that even the quick-witted Gunn is flummoxed by Cena. Personally, I find this very funny, and it just makes the actor incredibly endearing to me. In the end, the dude gets to play a DC superhero, and on top of that, it’s a character that’s never been played by anyone in the live-action realm. This means that the character will truly be seen as his ,for film and the mainstream. If I were in his position, you’d likely have a difficult time prying the suit off of me as well.
After what we saw in the TSS trailer, John Cena can do whatever he wants. As much as I adore Margot Robbie as Harley, Cena’s Peacemaker was easily the standout character in the trailer.
Peacemaker is currently in production and will premiere on HBO Max. The Suicide Squad will hit theatres and HBO Max in the US on August 6, 2021.
