Last Wednesday, James Gunn took to Twitter with some pretty massive news. With the positive reception to Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad, for which we still haven’t received a trailer, it looks like we’re already getting a spinoff. A Peacemaker series has officially been announced, with John Cena returning to the role, and James Gunn writing all episodes.
On Wednesday, James Gunn jumped on Twitter with a graphic, officially announcing Peacemaker for HBO Max, in which John Cena will be returning to play the role with TSS producer Peter Safran.

Breakout Character
The Hollywood Reporter would eventually post an article, providing further details. Apparently, amidst the massive cast, John Cena’s Peacemaker was the breakout character. It seems, Cena was so impressive that a Peacemaker series received a straight-to-series order for 8 episodes. Thankfully, James Gunn will be writing all 8, and directing several. Gunn and Safran will be executive producing the series, with Cena receiving co-executive producer credit. The series will serve as a prequel to TSS, exploring the origins of the Peacemaker. Considering how obscure the character is, this makes perfect sense.
At the moment, the plan to get the series into production in early 2021, before Gunn’s obligations to Marvel come up.
After the news dropped, a fan asked if Gunn would include other characters to help set up TSS, naming Blackguard. Gunn succinctly replied. Short and sweet.

Based on the Tweet, Gunn is planning something pretty cool in setting up this new Task Force X. Hopefully, he connects David Ayers’ Suicide Squad with this series as well.
World’s Biggest Douchebag

Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.
This looks to be a pretty exciting time for DC. Alongside the Matt Reeves’ Gotham PD series, HBO Max’s lineup of DC content is looking great.
Personally, I still can’t quite believe that John Cena has become a bankable movie star. In case you didn’t know, this man debuted on WWE with the worst delivery of “ruthless aggression” ever. It seems Gunn is in the business of making WWE wrestlers movie stars.
If we’re lucky, we could be seeing Peacemaker by late 2021, early 2022.
Are you excited? Good choice by WB/DC? Or a waste of time? Personally, I’d watch any comic book property by James Gunn, so I’m hype.
