Those who tuned in to last night’s episode of Gotham saw Morena Baccarin debut in the role of Dr. Leslie Thompkins. She’s no stranger to the world of DC Comics, having voiced several characters in animation, most notably Talia al Ghul in Son of Batman. Recently, she sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss her portrayal of a supporting character that is not only important to Batman, but to Bruce Wayne himself.

Here’s what she had to say about her motivation for joining the show:

“I really liked the world, I really liked the story and how it was being told, and thought it’d be really fun to be part of the cast and have such amazing actors and such a talented group of people all around. I liked the mythology of it, I liked what they told me about the character, her background and what she was going to do with Jim [Gordon, the show’s lead as played by Ben McKenzie]. It seemed like a smart gamble.”

It’s been rumored that she will sort of become a love interest for Jim Gordon. While she didn’t address that directly, she did comment on her character interacting with him:

“Our characters have great chemistry together and are real pals. It’s a great relationship; Leslie’s very unabashed and speaks her mind, and I think it’s a breath of fresh air for [Jim Gordon] to have a different dynamic in play. They’re really fun together.”

On becoming a series regular if the show gets picked up for a second season:

“I was excited by the possibility. I feel like, it’s one of those things that you have to wait and see how it works. You bring on any major new character, and you have to see how all the moving parts and going to hold together. But I think there’s a lot of possibility for her to stick around for a bit.”

I know all the talk lately involves her and Gordon, but I’m interested to see what happens when she finally gets to interact with a young Bruce Wayne. Leslie is a somewhat important puzzle piece in his growing up, so hopefully they develop that before long.

Gotham airs Mondays on Fox.
