Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder drops some future hints on Martha Wayne and her connection with the Absolute version of the Court of Owls.
Spoilers ahead!
We first get a tease of the Court of Owls in Absolute Batman #17– where we learn that Martha Wayne is familiar with them somehow. However despite the name, this version of the Court is dramatically different than their affluent counterparts in the mainstream DCU. In their limited appearances in issue 17 and 18, they appear to be much less wealthy and more of a grassroots organization, as seen by them wearing some black jumpsuits or flannels. The flannels in particular, seem to indicate that the Court is made up of more blue-collar members. By the end of issue #18, the Court seemingly executes Martha Wayne.

However in an interview with AIPT, Snyder promises that Martha is not dead and will indeed return soon.
“Martha comes back in the next couple of issues in a really big way, and she’ll explain the Court of Owls and what happened with them. They have their own history with Scarecrow. And a lot of what she went through that broke them apart was what Bruce is going through. When people convince you, when they isolate you, and they weaponize your own anger, sadness, and isolation, it’s so easy to fall into in this kind of world we live in.”
Big Plans for Absolute Court of Owls
That is interesting that the Court of Owls is also tied to the Scarecrow in some way. That also means that they are probably also related to the Joker- at least indirectly. Scott Snyder goes on to promise that the Court will play a big role moving forward.
“Very, very important. I don’t want to spoil things, but they’re important. Essentially, Martha had a bad experience with them, where they are not willing to help because of what happened in the past. But their resurgence is a big part of the story coming forward, and who helps make them come back and be a part of the story is a surprise.”
What could their connections be to the Scarecrow and the Joker? What is Martha’s relationship to them? How did she seemingly survive a direct gunshot?
The latest issue of Absolute Batman- number23- hits comic book shops today August 12th.
