Meta Quest has announced the next Batman game, Arkham Shadow, with a surprise teaser trailer.
This will be an exclusive video game for the Meta Quest 3 Virtual Reality system. Furthermore, probably due to the VR format, the normal Arkham games studio Rocksteady is not involved. Instead, Meta went with Camouflaj and Oculus Studios as the game’s developers. Camouflaj is the same game studio that created the Iron Man VR game.
There are very sparse details about the game itself, as the teaser trailer only gives us the faintest hints of what to expect. We see Batman’s perspective as he flies over a rainy, rat-filled Gotham City, before landing on the ground for the big hero shot.
For Bat-fans, the trailer and accompanying poster seem to hint at one of the villains being Rat-Catcher. There’s even a graffiti tag that has a stylized version of the Rat-Catcher’s mask, at the 11-second mark. Despite Rat-Catcher being a fairly minor villain, the game may just up his power levels, as well as his look.
Beyond that, fans don’t get a lot to speculate about. There isn’t even a tease of what the gameplay will look like, other than maybe the inclusion of the cape gliding traversal ability from Arkham City and Knight.
Chief among the list of unknowns is, who will replace Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman? The legendary actor passed away in 2022 with his last video game appearance in the recent Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Fortunately, Meta has promised that more information about the game will be revealed during the big Summer Game Fest showcase on June 7th.
Other Arkham VR Games
Arkham Shadow won’t be the first Batman game using VR. In 2016, Rocksteady released the Batman: Arkham VR, for the PS VR and other consoles. The game itself received mixed reviews, with one of the complaints being it’s relatively short gameplay time of 1-2 hours.
Batman: Arkham Shadow will be released in “Late 2024”.
