DC Studios co-president James Gunn confirmed in that Matt Reeves’ Arkham television show is not set in the same universe as The Batman.
On a Threads post, a fan asked about which continuity Matt Reeves’ various Batman-related projects are a part of. The fan was referring to The Batman Part 2, The Penguin Max streaming series, and the still-in-pre-production Arkham series.
Gunn threw a curveball and noted that The Batman Part 2 and The Penguin are in the same universe, but the Arkham series is within the universe of the new DCU.
This may come as a surprise for many fans since they assumed that Reeves’ involvement means that it’d be a part of The Batman‘s continuity. However, the Arkham show appears to be a completely separate entity. Instead of expanding the world of The Batman, the Arkham show can potentially expand the world of Brave and the Bold.
James Gunn says that the ‘Arkham’ Show’s set in the DCU
Gunn somewhat contradicted his original statement that Brave and the Bold is supposed to be the starting point for Batman in his new rebooted DCU. It’s possible that the Arkham show could be the real introduction to this aspect of the new universe. However, it’s not the first time that Gunn’s somewhat contradicted himself by omission. After his initial announcement of DCU movies and shows, he later stated that Blue Beetle was also retroactively a part of the shared universe.
To make things even more interesting, in a separate Threads post, a fan asked why The Batman isn’t a part of the shared DCU. Gunn stated that it was Matt Reeves’ choice to keep the two universes apart.
This implies that Reeves was also cool with converting the Arkham spin-off to a DCU show, but who knows for sure? There’s a lot of speculation based on the drips of information that James Gunn sometimes gives fans.
In the meantime, Reeves continues to work on The Batman Part 2 and The Penguin is back to filming again. A script is currently being worked on for Brave and the Bold.
