In preparation for next week’s continuation of the Gotham Academy series, I wanted to share my opinion about the series thus far to help spread the word about one of DC’s fastest growing and entertaining titles. If you haven’t been reading this comic you’re missing out because this team of talented writers (Brendan Fletcher and Becky Cloonan) and artist (Karl Kerschl) have a real winner on their hands.
This news comes as no surprise to the Gotham Academy faithful, like myself, who’ve kept up with the series since it began last October, but for those of you that haven’t, I hope it provides just the nudge needed to get you onboard.
From the first page of the beginning issue, I’ve been intrigued by the story’s fresh and imaginative approach. Not only does it flawlessly capitalize on the legendary mythos of Gotham City and the Wayne Foundation’s philanthropy efforts, it also provides rich backstories, secret ties to the past and fun, Gotham-related mysteries to follow.
Gotham Academy is the city’s most esteemed prep school. Being supported by wealthy benefactors and set in the midst of the Batman storyline, this teen drama introduces an interesting new twist for the Gotham community. The story revolves around second year student, Olive Silverlock, who returned to school after a mysterious incident during summer break with a strange case of amnesia and sudden fear of bats, her freshman sidekick, Maps Mizoguchi, and a group of curious high schoolers with a knack for stumbling into trouble. Already their investigative adventures around the school grounds have uncovered rumors of a ghost haunting the campus, the diary of Millie Jane Cobblepot (ancestor of the Penguin), a monster living in a hidden passageway and strange goings-on in the North Hall. As innocent as these carousing efforts sound they’ve also come with a price. Not only does knowledge of their escapades keep the group on the constant radar of every teacher, but also often lands them in the office of the school’s headmaster.
Aside from the charming students and interesting teachers, the school’s spooky campus (particularly the mysterious North Hall), and the diary of Millie Jane Cobblepot, the History of Gotham related class assignments, the odd cafeteria food choices and the occasional appearance of Bruce Wayne have all become some of the series more anticipated and endearing aspects.
And now in the upcoming issue, Gotham Academy #7, which is due out on June 10th, the school is adding a new student. His name is Damian Wayne. And with Damian being Batman’s son, his enrollment is not only sure to raise eyebrows, but also deepen the already enjoyable storyline.
Gotham Academy is gearing up to reveal more secrets than ever as it heads into summer with the throttle down. Be sure to add it to your June 10th checklist then visit back here frequently for full updates.
