The Batman opened to a record-setting $128.5 million at the domestic box office.

The film is considered the biggest blockbuster of 2022 so far. It boasts of one of the highest openings since the pandemic started. The Batman is the first movie opened in 2022 to make $100 million and is second only to Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s jaw-dropping $260.1 million opening weekend.

Projections the movie indicated that it would open to about $100 million. But the $128.5 million matched the higher end of the predictions.

Internationally, The Batman has already made $120 million across 74 countries. When adding the domestic gross, it made a total first-week global intake of $248.5 million. Additionally, IMAX screens contributed to $22.3 million.

But this may be the start of an international box office draw. The movie will soon be released in theaters in China on March 18. Typically, Chinese audiences can add a huge percentage to the worldwide gross. Interestingly, Russia will now not screen The Batman after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

‘The Batman’ Box Office versus ‘Spider-Man’

While as far as box office gross goes, it’s unlikely that The Batman will overtake Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s numbers, there are a number of factors that The Batman had to bypass that Spider-Man didn’t. One obstacle that The Batman had to overcome was an almost-three-hour running time, which typically limits the number of showings a movie can play per day in a theater. Furthermore, this is the first film in a new series, unlike No Way Home, which is the third installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man franchise. The Batman’s numbers may also be hampered by HBO Max’s plan to release it on streaming after 45 days.

The Batman is now playing in theaters. It will also stream on HBO Max on April 19, 2022.
