Review by Fay Clark

Last month, a freaky portal appeared out of nowhere and dragged in Barbara Gordon. Obviously, the rest of the team’s going in to get their girl back, no question. I just hope that the freaky portal isn’t going to be an issue in Birds Of Prey #9… but we all know that’s not going to happen.

I’m Sorry… WHAT?

Kelly Thompson’s at it again, the ideas just don’t stop flowing and it happens seamlessly, issue after issue. This month may see the start of a new arc, but it al feels like an effortless continuation of the ongoing storyline. All of the threads are weaving together and bringing us full circle. I’m not sure how long it will be until we get answers, but I know that they’re coming.

The confidence these characters have in each other is unmatched. Thompson writes these women as having an unbreakable bond, through fire and trials… and it shows. There are some truly amazing moments in this chapter that I could hammer on about for a very long time. Without spoiling anything, just watch out for Cass and Dinah. That right there is a perfect example of Women for Women, written by a woman, and about women. It’s stunning.

Back in Time

We also get an outfit change, a color change, and a new art team… what else could we want? Jonathan Case and Gavin Guidry bounce onto the scene and steal the show. The artwork’s creepy and unsettling, much like the setting, and it adds so much to the comic.

All of this is enhanced by a complete shift in hues from Jordie Bellaire. We start with sepia, go into full color, and end in monochrome. We get every angle of tone possible, yet it doesn’t feel forced. Everything matches with the plot and setting of the story. This is a very strong art team, and I can’t wait to see what they do with the rest of the arc.

Conclusion

You have got to be kidding me. I have no idea what’s going on, or what will happen next. Everything about this arc is madness, yet I couldn’t put Birds of Prey #9 down. This has been a fantastic run, and I pray that it continues for a long, long time. I’m so happy that we’re around to see this new set of characters come together.
