Over the last few weeks, since the announcement of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, director David Ayer has hoped to begin a campaign to release his version of Suicide Squad. Though not nearly as controversial as Justice League, 2016’s Suicide Squad also suffered from studio interference. Therefore, the theatrical version of SS was not what Ayer originally envisioned. Though at first, it didn’t seem there was enough fan support despite Ayer’s insistence, they have organized. A Twitter account has declared July 20th as #ReleaseTheAyerCut Day.

Apparently, back in September 2019, a Twitter account called @RTAyerCutSS had been created. Similar to the #SnyderCut movement, their goal is to push WB/DC to release the cut of SS that Ayer envisioned. Seemingly overshadowed at first, they made a bold statement on Twitter that seems to have gotten the attention of the Internet. They proclaimed July 20th as #ReleaseTheAyerCut Day, which means tomorrow, their campaign will begin in earnest.

Take a look as the tweet below:

They eventually provided further details to those who would like to participate. As a Twitter Trending event, the goal is simply to create hashtags that will trend on Twitter, go viral, and hopefully capture the attention of WB.

If you would like to participate, take a look at the Tweet below:

Will it be enough?

Overall, simple set of instructions. Use the hashtags #ReleaseTheAyerCut and #OpSkwad while tagging @HBOMax and @ATT. While it’s not their actual intention to coerce WB with this event, they hope that the attention generated and the show of support will at least show the execs that fans want to see it.

Personally, while I understand David Ayer wants to see his vision for the movie, I think it’s unlikely. At first, I didn’t think there was enough fan support for it. And seemingly to shut me up, the movement has made waves on the Internet with this announcement to show that there is fan supporth for this version of SS. Despite this however, there’s evidence showing that it’s still unlikely. WB caved for the #SnyderCut, but I highly doubt that they would again. They don’t want to set a precedent that fans can just demand whatever they want.

Either way, if you really want to see it, be sure to join the trending event tomorrow. It starts at 8AM and ends at midnight local time.

What do you think? Do you believe that this event could really make a difference? Or do you believe it won’t help very much? Let me know.

Suicide Squad is currently streaming on HBO Max.
