‘Clayface’ Movie Eyeing Potential Directors

The Clayface movie is whittling down its short-list of directors to helm the film.

According to Deadline, the studio is ready to hear pitches from various directors. However, the two main candidates include Truth or Dare‘s Jeff Waldow and Speak No Evil‘s James Watkins.

James Gunn, Peter Safran,  Matt Reeves, and Lynn Harris will produce Clayface. Chantal Nong will executive producer. While Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan wrote a pitch for the movie, he never had plans to direct it, since he is occupied with rebooting the Exorcist and Carrie franchise.

With the movie getting a director soon, fans can expect casting announcements after that.

The movie will be less in the superhero genre and more in the horror category. On Twitter in 2021, Flanagan envisioned the “Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy.” With horror directors like Watkins and Waldow, it certainly seems like DC Studios is pushing for the horror route too.

To be fair, there is no official word yet on if either director will eventually make the cut. DC Studios did not return a comment when Deadline reached out.

Clayface will hit theaters on September 11, 2026.
