The Justice League finally returns in their ongoing series Justice League Unlimited.
DC announced the new monthly series at San Diego Comic-Con Absolute Power panel this past weekend. The League disbanded after their apparent deaths in the beginning of Dark Crisis. After the crisis was adverted, the League decided to not regroup and allowed the Titans to be the flagship team. But in the wake of Absolute Power, it is time to recruit and get ready to take down major evil threats.
It has been about two years since DC published a Justice League title. The previous one ended with issue #75 in 2022. Now Mark Waid and Dan Mora (Worlds’ Finest) will be headlining the comic as the new creative team.
Who is on Justice League Unlimited?
The roster are a mix of long-time members and new surprises. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Flash are the old guards. Additionally, Captain Atom, Star Sapphire, the Atom, and Black Lightning fill out the rest of the team. Their first mission is to battle it out with Darkseid, who may or may not be creating the Absolute Universe.
The new League’s headquarters are at a satellite Watchtower. The new meeting place will have docking stations, Quarters of Solitude, a Boom Tube, and a portal to the Phantom Zone.
It is to note that the roster maybe fluid. Writer Waid was quick to state that he plans to use all different kinds of heroes (with the exception of Jonah Hex).
“They’re on the team. Big missions, big stories, small stories, and the Watchtower is basically home to every superhero on Earth.”
It seems like the new comic series may have a similar conceit of the original cartoon series from the DCAU. In the cartoon show, the cast was constantly rotating- giving the spotlight to many characters beyond the normal super seven Leaguers. As serendipity would have it, this year is also JLU‘s 20th anniversary. A new comic is not a bad way to celebrate.
