HBO Max head of originals, Sarah Aubrey, promises the Penguin spin-off series will act as a bridge between The Batman movies.

Aubrey confirmed that the HBO Max original series will be set immediately after The Batman. Just as series star Colin Farrell previously stated, the show starts with Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot dealing with the flooding of Gotham City thanks to the Riddler.

“‘Penguin’ will sit immediately after the end of ‘The Batman’ and temporally before the events of the second movie. The show will come out in between the two movies. Now beyond that, it’s fun for the audience to know that it will be a bridge between the two, but the actual release date, I’m not at liberty to say.”

Penguin is a Strategist and Hustler

Additionally, Aubrey seems to have confirmed Penguin‘s episode count. According to her, there will be eight episodes in the series.

“The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can. As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions. It is a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters. It’s very much going to be about Gotham at that street level because he’s not flying around as Batman does. We’re all embracing that as a very specific experience for audiences to have.”

It seems like we’ll get to see even more of Gotham City’s seedy underworld. Furthermore, Farrell will get the chance for Oz to really stretch his metaphorical wings and show off how he rose to become a crime boss. This is perfectly in line with The Batman, where Oz was under the thumb of Carmine Falcone. However, now that the crime lord’s dead, Oz can swoop in and install himself as the new kingpin.

It will be interesting to see where it goes and all of the twists and turns the journey will take.
