DCeased: War Of The Undead Gods #3 shows the spread of the anti-life virus across Rann, Thanagar, and the universe at large. The cosmic stakes are growing and revelations made by Ares at Wonder Woman’s funeral seem to indicate that this is a war our heroes cannot possibly hope to win.
Wowza. Just when you think that Tom Taylor cannot possibly have any more ways to crush our hope and terrify us, along comes the latest issue of DCeased. From page one we see more hearts broken, families destroyed and the threat of the undead plague becoming more and more universe engulfing.
We’ve already witnessed the fall of New Genesis, Apokolips, and Korugar. Now, the homes of Adam Strange and Hawkman are also consumed by the plague… in the most soul-wrenching way imaginable. The way that Tom Taylor has adapted the tragedy of Covid and its effects on families all over the world, and reflected them using heroes, villains, gods and monsters is really cool. I love the way that he enhances the horror by making his characters, fallible, sympathetic, and very, very human.
Trevor Hairsine and Andy Lanning help tremendously. Both these artists are sublime storytellers, and the way they show emotion on the faces of every character is astonishing. I felt everything Adam Strange did, thanks to their work, and the emotions at Diana’s funeral were also beautifully captured. This art team is killing it… if you’ll pardon the pun.
Rain Beredo and Saida Temofonte are also delivering tremendous work. The DCeased universe has always had its own feel and atmosphere, and the work of these two tremendously talented artists is a huge part of that. These stories look different to everything else out there, and that’s a massive reason as to why these tales are destined to become regarded as classics.
Conclusion
DCeased: War Of The Undead Gods #3 continues to shock, thrill and delight. What we’re getting is modern mythology that, particularly with this issue, even starts to tie in with real-world mythology. Fans of Greek history and legend should find the final page spine-chilling! Anyone unfamiliar with what we see depicted can get answers from a simple web search.
Darkness is rising, and things look grim. Don’t you just love it?!?
