Director James Gunn has done amazing things for the superhero world, and we might be able to see his work again because he has announced that there’s a second The Suicide Squad spinoff in the works. Also, we may be getting a second season of Peacemaker sooner than later.

Rumour is that Gunn approached HBO Max with a new idea for another series for one more of The Suicide Squad characters. Nothing has been written or greenlit, but based on Gunn’s enthusiasm for the new project, we expect that we will be hearing good news about it in the future. In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Gunn said:

We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe. I can’t quite say.

From the many characters Gunn has in his The Suicide Squad movie, he could simply close his eyes and pick any one of them and there would be an interesting story to tell, so there’s no guessing who exactly he has in mind right now. When asked about whether Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi will return to play The Thinker, however, Gunn laughed:

I can’t say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker, it won’t be as much a comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.

When the interview turned to Peacemaker, starring John Cena, possibly getting a second season, Gunn answered:

The show is doing extraordinarily well, and we’re excited, we all like doing it, we just need to cross some Ts and dot some Is, which is basically me.

Deadline asked the director whether he had any regrets about The Suicide Squad being released day-and-date in cinemas and on HBO Max last summer. While critically acclaimed and an audience favourite, the movie made $55.8M domestic and $167.4M WW at the box office, however, the original Suicide Squad from Zack Snyder in 2016, way before the pandemic, earned $325.1M stateside and $746.8M WW.

It’s been borne out that things didn’t work the best, but I have to say that process is working out incredibly well for me because of Peacemaker. I wasn’t happy about Suicide Squad going to TV day and date, we also happened to come out at the absolute peak of Delta, so it was a difficult decision. For the sake of Peacemaker, I’m really glad: It got more subscribers for HBO, billions of people saw it on HBO; for Peacemaker it worked out really well.

It was during the 2020 lockdown, while he was finishing editing The Suicide Squad that the idea for the Peacemaker series came to him. He added:

I was starting to get bored, because I was locked down, I was depressed, I was having heavy anxiety like a lot of us were at that time and still today, and I needed something to take care of myself. That’s where the show comes from. I needed something to soothe myself.

Is there a character from the Squad you hope will star in their own TV series? Let us know!
