Actor Jeffrey Wright has posted a hilarious reaction to a fan who criticized his casting as Jim Gordon because he’s not white

In an exchange on Twitter, one fan bluntly asked Wright if he was appropriate for the role of Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming The Batman movie. The person specifically asked Wright’s casting is true to the virtue of the character who is traditionally Caucasian.

Wright did not mince words in his reaction, in fact, he didn’t respond with words at all. The acclaimed actor merely posted a short clip from the 1976 movie The Pink Panther Strikes Again.

The clip depicts Peter Seller’s Inspector Clouseau destroying an expensive Steinway piano. The clip ends with the onlooker incredulously gasping, “That was a Steinway!” and another onlooker bluntly responding “Not anymore.”

Jeffrey Wright and Race

Wright made himself pretty clear with that clip. He doesn’t care about what people think of his casting. People who hold certain values, such as Commissioner Gordon being Caucasian, are going to have their notions broken down with Wright’s performance.

On the other hand, people can interpret the clip as Wright’s frustration at being asked about his race for certain roles too. He is an accomplished actor with many awards under his belt, including a Tony. He has been in acclaimed plays, television shows, and video games. He should not have to explain his casting at all, as he got the gig because he’s clearly the best man for the job.

See Wright’s James Gordon when The Batman hits theaters on March 4, 2022. It will also stream on HBO Max on April 19, 2022.
