Zack Snyder Reveals Original ‘Batman v Superman’ Title

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was not always the title for the Man of Steel sequel. It has recently been revealed by both director Zack Snyder and writer Chris Terrio some alternate titles that they were thinking of using.

Even the name that they landed on required some intense negotiations with Warner Bros. regarding using just a “v” instead of the full “versus.”

Here is what Snyder said regarding his thoughts on the film’s title when speaking to WB:

I was like ‘Guys, can’t we just do something like Son of Sun and Knight of Night or something that’s a little bit more poetic?’ And they were like, ‘Absolutely not’ [Laughs]. I was like, ‘Is it a court case?

While the title we landed on, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, isn’t too subtle on the future Justice League plans, they almost went even more on the nose with it. Screenwriter Chris Terrio states some of the title options were Justice League: Foundations or Justice League: Rising.

Not that Batman v Superman is a great or unique title for a movie about Batman fighting Superman, it certainly beats the alternatives. Plus, it has the fairly snappy and simple nickname BvS.

Zack Snyder v WB

It’s just unfortunate that every single thing Snyder wanted to do with his DC films was a 10 round boxing match with WB. Snyder revealed earlier this year that he had to fight tooth and nail to keep his vision from studio interference. After the tragic death of his daughter, he just didn’t have the fight in him anymore and walked away from the project to be with his family.

Both the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League are superior to the theatrical cut. WB will learn their lesson one day, maybe.

While we have likely seen the last of a Snyder lead DC film, at least we got to finally see Zack Snyder’s Justice League. And who knows, we never thought we’d get the #SnyderCut, so maybe an HBO Max series to #RestoreTheSnyderverse is in the future.

What are your thoughts on the original working titles for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? Do you wish the studio went with one of those? What would you have named the movie? Let us know!
