Catwoman is one of Batman’s most iconic villains, or allies depending on the interpretation. Almost every live-action iteration of the character has had a live-action Catwoman counterpart (sorry Ben Affleck). Fans last saw Ms. Kyle on the silver screen in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, played by Anne Hathaway.

Zoe Kravitz will be the next Cat to go up against Robert Pattinson’s big bad Bat in The Batman. In a recent interview with Collider, Anne Hathaway gave some advice to the new cat burglar in Gotham. That advice was…don’t listen to advice.

If I had any advice it would be to literally don’t listen to anybody, because I think the only way to play that role is to give your version of it. All of us had different directors and all of our interpretations were specific to the films that they were in, kind of like my Grand High Witch is specific to Bob Zemeckis, and Angelica Huston’s is specific to Nicolas Roeg’s, and that’s great! All the Jokers were specific to each director they have, and so I don’t think you can get too bogged down with the comparison, especially when you’re not the one doing it because your job is to give yours. I’m so excited to see what she does with it. I thought she was a perfect choice.

Different Directors, Different Interpretations

She does bring up a great point of how each interpretation of the characters are specific to their directors. If you flip flop Anne Hathaway’s and Michelle Pfeiffer’s versions with each other, they don’t work. Same goes for Jack and Heath’s Jokers. They each fit within the world they are created for. The same will go for Zoe’s Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ Gotham.

Hathaway did congratulate Zoe Kravitz, back when she was first cast in the role, and all the previous Catwomen (Catwomans?) also gave their support.

Zoe Kravitz will make her Catwoman debut in The Batman on March 4, 2022.
