Actor Jake Gyllenhaal has stated that “it’s an honor” to play Batman, as well as calling it”a classic role”.
During his press tour to promote his latest movie, the Road House remake, Gyllenhaal got candid about potentially playing Batman.
ScreenRant asked the actor straight up if he would still be interested in taking on the role. Previously, Gyllenhaal had auditioned for the part when Batman Begins was in production, obviously losing out to Christian Bale. Begins’ screenwriter David Goyer revealed recently that Gyllenhaal had been his top choice to play Batman.
Gyllenhaal had a fairly excitable response. He compared playing Batman to playing Iago in Othello. The comparison is palpable, because Iago, like Batman, has been played by many actors.
Oh, man. That’s a classic [role]. It’s an honor. Speaking of playing roles that other incredible actors have played in the past … When I think about it, I’m going to play Iago in ‘Othello’ with Denzel Washington, and I think about like the history of actors that have played that role throughout time, and I’m intimidated by that. So that’s the first level.. that’s what I’m working on right now. Of course, it would be an honor, always. Those types of things and those roles are classics.”
Jake Gyllenhaal Could be an Older Dark Knight
The response comes on the heels of the rumors that Jake Gyllenhaal should play the Dark Knight in The Brave and the Bold. The actor’s currently 43, which is older than a lot of superheroes, however, since The Brave and the Bold is looking for a more experienced Batman who’s old enough to have a son like Damian Wayne as Robin, Gyllenhaal seems like a good choice.
For now, there is no official casting news on The Brave and the Bold. The only thing that fans know is that the movie will be a part of the new James Gunn-led DCU movie universe. The man behind The Flash, Andy Muschietti, will direct the film.
