Sideshow Collectibles have released pre-order details for a Batman and Catwoman fine art print by superstar comic artist David Finch, entitled “The Bat And The Cat”.

David Finch started his career in 1994, taking over from Marc Silvestri on Cyberforce (Top Cow). It wasn’t long before he was snapped up by Marvel where he worked on New Avengers and Ultimate X-Men. A notoriously violent Moon Knight story written by horror author Charlie Hutson cemented the tone of his work: dark, intense and heavy on muscular action.

In 2010 he joined DC and, inevitably, was quickly drawing Batman, collaborating with Grant Morrison for Batman #700. The following year saw the release of Batman: The Dark Knight series, illustrated and co-written by Finch.

David Finch On Batman

Batman is a character that I know very well, and I had a strong sense of direction for him. I would be more reluctant to take on a character that I don’t feel like I can relate to as well.

He’s very driven and black and white. I love that in a world of so much grey he can cut through it with so much clarity. Right or wrong, he never has to question.

There’s something very engaging about a character that pushes his limits and never surrenders. There are so many variables and possibilities in a story, but you always know what Batman will do.

“The Bat And The Cat” is taken from the cover to Batman (vol. 3) #24 which Finch co-illustrated and was written by Tom King. The Finch and King pairing on Batman proved to be so effective that they won an Eisner award for their short story “Good Boy” included in 2016’s Batman Annual.

King’s run on the main series proved to be controversial, filled with as many insightfully ingenious moments as there were unpopular decisions. The one area that most readers enjoyed, however, was his depiction of the relationship between Batman and Catwoman. It was the beating heart of the entire story arc and gradually built to the shock moment in the climax of this issue when Bruce drops to one knee and proposes. Surely a classic comic, particularly in the long and winding history between two of the most ill-fated star-crossed lovers in superhero comics.

The print captures a strangely old-fashioned romantic pose, like something from the cover of a Mills & Boon novel, which is appropriate for an issue with a marriage proposal in it. Except there’s also something tongue-in-cheek about Catwoman’s pose, the way her leg is raised with her adoring look. While Batman seems unmoved in his sideways stance, his hand is round her waist and his mouth is slightly open suggesting uncertainty. It’s hard to tell from the image where this relationship is going. Ain’t that ever been the truth!

Add to that a Bat-signal that somehow looks like a substitute for a giant heart rather than a dramatic call to arms, and you have yourselves a fascinating snapshot of a complex relationship. “I knew. Even at the beginning.”

Sideshow presents The Bat and the Cat Fine Art Print, a stunningly romantic DC Comics art print by artist David Finch.

The Bat and the Cat Fine Art Print captures all the tension and anticipation present in the relationship between these two vigilantes. Catwoman, as confident and alluring as ever, drapes herself across her sometimes-lover and sometimes-enemy, Batman. Enthralled, Batman holds her waist, though his expression betrays his hesitation.

The Bat-Signal shines upon a beautiful pink sky behind the pair, illuminating themes of romance, hope, and a new direction. Catwoman and Batman have done this dance for a long time — will they finally take the next step towards one another?

Originally created as a variant cover for Batman Vol. 3 #24 (2017), written by Tom King for DC Comics, this super hero art is now available to fans as an unframed giclée print or in a custom framed presentation. Each The Bat and the Cat Fine Art Print features an embossed Seal of Authenticity as part of the limited edition of 200 pieces.
