An NFT of Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 has been added to the ranks of digital NFT titles available through DC Collectible Comics (DC3) meaning that you can now own a digital slice of the first issue of one of the bravest, craziest major DC event series ever published.

Originally published in June 2020, Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 began the follow-up series to Dark Nights: Metal, which came out three years prior. DK:M started with Batman (as all good series should do) discovering a Dark Multiverse existing under the current one.

While the initial story featured seven evil versions of Batman, writer Scott Snyder‘s idea of a Dark Multiverse was more than just a story, it was a springboard of inspiration for dark versions of characters that perverted their traits and powers and allowed artists to invent cool new interpretations that have led to – and continue to inspire – several cabinets worth of action figures. Take the brilliant The Batman Who Laughs, a version of Batman mixed with the Joker thanks to intoxication from Joker venom – a character that springs from child-like ‘what if?’ but who was affectively realised enough to warrant his own graphic novel.

The three-year saga came to a close with Dark Nights: Death Metal, although it also promised to unify all DCU stories including the continuities springing out of the Flashpoint event in 2011. The series was written once again by Scott Snyder working with his frequent collaborator Greg Capullo. The advertising screamed that “The mayhem is immanent” and by now we knew what to expect – essentially, the unexpected.

As with DK:M a metal soundtrack album was released featuring tracks from rockers including including Marilyn Manson, so you can imagine Snyder and Capullo working on the series with speed metal vibrating the room. Wonder Woman with a chainsaw anyone? How about Batman using the Black Lantern power ring to command an army of zombies? Or a robot Tyrannosaurus with the uploaded consciousness of the Dark Knight? Of course Harley Quinn has a buzzcut and a giant hyena on a leash.

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo were approaching the end of an incredibly successful run on Batman that had earned them the right to the keys to the DCU playroom, and they had the confidence to blow the doors off it. Comics can’t be like this all the time otherwise they’d be no stability from which to build from, but holy heck it’s so refreshing when it is done, and an extra treat when it’s done this well.

DC3’s release of Dark Nights: Death Metal #1 NFT comes in five cover versions of rarity for you to buy into including the classic image of Batman playing a flaming electric guitar. Go to DC NFT Marketplace for full product listings as the products are already on sale and availability is limited.
