Review by Fay Clark

This series is shaping up to be truly amazing and the latest issue, Batgirls #10, is ready to show us some exciting things. If you’ve been keeping up with all the crazy that makes up the Batgirls lives, you’ll know that there are several plots and threads that are all weaving into one story, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Hot Girl Summer

We’re back with a Gotham heatwave. Those must be brutal. Cloonan and Conran have plans for days and the plotlines just keep on coming, and are always intriguing. I literally have no idea what’s going to happen next, which is one of the best parts of their writing. I love the monologue that catches people up on where we are, and that’s super sassy. I have a theory about who’s talking, but I think I might save that for next time, as I’m not completely convinced yet.

The interactions between characters are all fantastic and the dialogue’s fast paced and entertaining. Cloonan and Conrad are clearly on a roll with this series, because Batgirls #10 is some awesome work!

There are a few interactions that I wanted to point out, specifically, but I’m not sure that I can do that without spoiling things. What I will say is that Babs has two interactions that are amazing, Steph has one, and everything that comes out of Cass’ mouth is a delight. The fact that Cloonan and Conrad can write together, but make sure that all the characters have such different personalities is why they’re great!

Extreme Close Up

Neil Googe, what fantastic work you do. I think we’ve found my favourite thing that you’ve drawn and they’re all in this issue. That one close up panel… that’s something that I’d get framed. The detail’s amazing and the mix between cartoon and realism’s incredible. That extra dash of reality changes the scene, but in a great way! If you then add in Rico Renzi’s color work.. well, you get stunning art. The hues match perfectly to the tone of the images, the warm hues used throughout help you think about the heatwave and how it’s affecting everything. Even at night, you can tell.

Conclusion

Becky Cloonan and Michael W. Conrad have been amazing this whole time, keeping the reader on their toes with twists and turns. I can’t wait till we get all the answers. OH, THE FEELINGS.
