Batman Returns Penguin actor Danny DeVito has opened up about writing for the Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant, as well as Colin Farrell becoming the new Penguin.

DeVito revealed his process for writing the Penguin-centric short story for the Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant. He genuinely loves the character, because DeVito can see his personality in him. He also enjoyed putting part of that into the comic book story.

There is a little Oswald in me, and then there’s Danny. I’m not a closed book, I’m pretty much an open book.

Devito also took inspiration from the real-life COVID pandemic too.

I love that character so much. It was thrust upon me at a time when I’ve always been in love with Catwoman. Not only Oswald being in love with Catwoman, but Danny being in love with Michelle Pfeiffer. I jumped on the opportunity and the first thing that came to mind was the romance.

Then, it was in the middle of COVID and I said, “Look at what love can do”. I just applied it to the story and I sat down and in a few weeks, I had knocked out the whole idea and wrote it and they responded to it and to have Dan Mora to do the artwork, it’s so brilliant. His stuff is just so masterful. I feel blessed to be in that company and the way it turned out, I couldn’t be happier.

Not to say that Danny DeVito wasn’t respectful of his one-time Batman Returns co-star Michelle Pfeiffer. As he wrote the story, he also asked for her blessing on the Penguin-Catwoman romance that occurs in the comic.

I did call Michelle and tell her that I was doing it. I said, “Look, it’s like my fantasy and it’s my dream come true to have an incredible romance with such a beautiful woman.” Oswald, I’m talking about, and Selina. She was very excited to hear about it.

With the impending The Batman film coming out soon, DeVito also gave his opinion on Colin Farrell’s casting of the Penguin. DeVito could not be happier.

I love Colin Farrell. He’s one of my favorite actors. I can’t wait!
