Ruby Rose Speaks Out About ‘Batwoman’ Exit and Latex Allergy

As Batwoman fans know, Ruby Rose left the show after only one season playing the titular character. Rose made history as the first openly lesbian actor to play a superhero. Despite this, numerous reasons came up that caused Rose to leave the iconic role. Most recently, Rose disclosed that she developed a latex allergy while filming the show.

Last year, the actress announced her departure from Batwoman and the role of Kate Kane, citing back injuries she got from doing stunts for the show. Later on, she added that her back injuries ended up not being the real reason she left. The COVID pandemic interrupted filming of the first season. This in turn caused delays and separations for the actress from the character. While Rose remained a fan of the show and character, she likely lost much of her passion for contributing to Batwoman in the same way.

Now, Rose is further adding on to her statements about leaving Batwoman.

I did find out that I was allergic to latex… Unfortunately, my mask is latex… I was getting worse and worse, because as you get more contact with it, I guess you get more reactions. I took off the (mask) at the end, and my face was just hives. My throat was all messed up… It was like it was out of a scary movie.

While filming as Kate Kane, Rose said that she had a previously unknown latex allergy. Rose obviously had to put her health first, because her costume, like many superheroes’, is made largely of latex.

Rose is not the first actor to have to step back from or make changes to a project due to allergies (Daniel Radcliffe famously had an allergic reaction to contacts he was supposed to wear to portray Harry Potter in the film series of the same name). However, it is sad that the actress had to leave behind such an iconic role for her health.

Despite leaving Batwoman, Rose has stated that she is still a fan of the show and is supportive of the series continuing without her. Javicia Leslie has taken on the mantle of the Crimson Knight and we are excited to see her continue in the role.

Batwoman airs Sundays at 8/7c on The CW
