DC is making the most of today’s digital age by getting fans involved in the creative process. In this case, the writers of Nightwing/Dick Grayson’s new story wanted readers’ input in the naming of Dick’s new puppy, Haley. Last week, Tom Taylor shared the results of the puppy poll on his Twitter page.

The three-legged rescue pup was named Haley, beating out the other name options of Shadow, Blue, and Hope. Dick rescued little Haley in the most recent issue of Nightwing. This new storyline is part of DC’s Infinite Frontier. The possibility of a fan vote shows the different path that the producers want to take with Dick Grayson’s story. In previously released statements, the creative team promised that the beloved Nightwing will be properly celebrated in their new story.
Tom Taylor expanded on this, explaining in a statement that now is the best time for DC to feature Dick Grayson:
This is the perfect time for a Nightwing story. It’s the right time for a charming, entertaining, positive force for good standing with the underrepresented, and pushing back against corruption and greed.
It’s the perfect name, as a young Dick Grayson was raised in Haley’s Circus, as part of his parents’ high flying trapeze act.
We look forward to seeing where Nightwing’s new adventures take him and what sort of challenges he will face. Plus, the addition of a cute furball never hurt anyone! Not only will Haley become a fun part of the story, but it seems likely that the pup will become an important part of the new Dick Grayson lore.
