Entertainment Weekly has unveiled early Harley Quinn concept art for Suicide Squad, which showcase a few different, unused designs for the antiheroine.
In the issue, costume designer Kate Hawley explains that the inspirations for the final look of the character were pulled from everything from comics, rock and roll icons to (of all things) Mexican drug cartels.
Hawley also explains that Harley’s deliberate sexiness is designed to cater to her own ideas of sexiness, and not what a man like the Joker would find sexy.
Harley Quinn is without a doubt one of the characters fans are most excited to see in Suicide Squad and these bits of concept art give us an interesting look at the progression of her overall look to the final version we’ll be seeing in theaters this August.
Directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and many more, Suicide Squad opens on August 5th.
