Trinity is far and away my favorite DC title right now. Francis Manapul and team are creating an instant classic storyline that adds depth to the already famous lore of these beloved characters. The angle of an alternate reality to create dissonance on their origin stories elevates the true continuity. It’s a way of retelling without retreading.

Trinity #3 focuses on Batman, as the primary character. While Superman saw the resuscitation of his father in Trinity #2, Batman relives the trauma of his parents’ murder. As he wrestles with the resurfaced trauma, Bruce must come to grips with the guilt he feels as result of the multiple deaths in his life:  Thomas and Martha Wayne, Jason Todd, Tim Drake. After Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth, young Bruce finally hears the truth, “It’s not your fault.”

The alternative reality is taking its emotional toll. However, the heroes are beginning to put the pieces together, and things are not as they seem. Led to believe they were in another time – somewhere in the past – they are now aware reality has been altered. The feelings are real, but the experiences are false. Readers see the heroes in the clutches of Poison Ivy, who has trapped them in the Kent’s barn. Physically, they are present; yet, their minds are altered in a dream-like reality. To escape, the three heroes must learn to trust each other.

The art in this issue is outstanding. Manapul and team continue the trend of the past two issues. Detail is what makes this issue stand out. The panels are framed in an a creative way that adds to the feel of the issue. One panel, a close-up of Diana, shows her wind-blown hair with incredible intricacy. It looks nearly three-dimensional. I appreciated the detail on the classic Advanced Design (1947-early 1955) Chevrolet pick-up truck – a favorite of mine. I was blown away by this panel – the light bursting through the barn door shards was incredible. I continue to be impressed with the use of color in shading – it appears painted rather than drawn and inked and renders transitions flawlessly. Breathtakingly beautiful art.

Trinity #3 continues to impress. It is incredibly beautiful with an insightful story. Seeing these quintessential heroes explore their psyche under the influence of a powerful villainess is truly compelling. I am blown away by this storyline and title right now.
