Despite some new competition, Suicide Squad remains at the top of the domestic weekend box office.
This past weekend, the super villain team-up movie added $20.7 million in North America for a domestic box office of $262.3 million. That is an over 50% audience drop from the previous weekend. The domestic movie gross is currently ahead of what Guardians of the Galaxy made in the same timeframe of their theatrical run in 2014.
On the international side, Suicide Squad made an additional $38 million this weekend for a foreign total of $310.4 million. Those numbers combined with the domestic gross gives Suicide Squad a total worldwide gross of $572.7 million.
The good news for fans is that the film still has some untapped markets. It will be opening in Japan on September 5. Earlier this year, Batman v Superman opened in Japan to $3 million and went on to make $16.5 million there. If Suicide Squad has a similar gross as Batman v Superman in the Japanese market, we can be soon looking at the film surpassing the $600 million worldwide box office milestone in the immediate future.
