The stop-motion animated movie Dynamic Duo officially announced Mason Thames is their Dick Grayson.
The announcement was made after a ton of rumors about the actor swirled around the internet last week. DC Studios co-president Peter Safran made it official. Safran reported how Thames was extremely excited and was a huge fan of the Robin/ Nightwing character. The actor brought so much enthusiasm that Safran called Thames’ audition “awesome.”
“We always talk about wanting volunteers and not recruits to be part of the DCU, to be part of DC Studios, and Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He just did. He’s a wonderful young actor, but boy, did he want this. He was just obsessed. When he came over to the DC offices … we’ve got tons of great archives and stuff in there, and [he] wanted to take a picture of everything and with everything. He’s a fan.”
Mason Thames is a child actor who already had multiple lead roles in his relatively short career. He played the lead Hiccup in the live-action remake How to Train Your Dragon. He also was the child lead the horror film The Black Phone and its sequel. Beyond those roles, Thames also guest-starred on the Apple TV For All Mankind show and even in one of Mckenna Grace’s music videos- who is also his girlfriend.

Dynamic Duo is supposed to be a one-shot film that details the journey of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd before they become Robins. Swaybox Studios will be making Dynamic Duo alongside DC Studios. Swaybox pioneered a modern stop-motion animation that combines puppeteering with CGI. Check out 2016’s Kubo and the Two Strings to get an idea of the idiosyncratic style. Safran touted how the animation will be cutting edge and unique. He even cited it “as original today as Pixar was when it did Toy Story.”
“…even though it’s puppets with an overlay of CGI, the fact that it’s shot with real cameras brings a visceral nature to the action in a way that I don’t think animation itself ever can really capture.”
Dynamic Duo will hit theaters on September 22, 2028.
