Clayface debuted at the top of the box office for North America this past week.

The body horror movie came out with a respectable $24.5 million opening weekend in America, barely edging out the Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything.

Additionally, the film made an additional $19 million worldwide, making the grand total to be over $44 million opening weekend. Not a bad start to this low-budget horror movie based on a lesser-known Batman villain. While it might seem low for a movie based on a comic book, keep in mind the budget was a mere fraction of a typical superhero movie.

Clayface boasts of a modest budget of around $40 million, which is a drop in the bucket for reported $225 million budget for last year’s Superman. So while it is definitely lower opening gross than other DC Studios projects, it also has a far lower ceiling to clear to be considered profitable.

So what does that mean for the future of the box office for the movie? It depends on how well-received it is by the audience. According to the Deadline article, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn pointed out that Clayface received an A- CinemaScore. That is the same score as big horror hits like Obsession, Weapons and Get Out.

So it is looking pretty interesting for our mud-filled villain.

Clayface is now playing in theaters everywhere.
