The trailer for the animated movie trilogy Batman: Knightfall hits the internet.
Even though the trailer is only a minute long, it really packed so much information and teases into. The trailer actually previews three animated movies that makes up the Knightfall cartoon adaptation. For Bat-Fans, the comic book Knightfall storyline was an epic crossover event that lasted over a year. It elevated Bane into a top-tier threat for Batman, as he concocted a plan to wear Batman out by blowing up Arkham Asylum, forcing the Dark Knight to capture all of the escaped inmates. This ultimately climaxed to Bane defeating and breaking Batman’s back. Batman’s back breaking also led to Jean-Paul Valley aka Azrael to taking up the mantle of Batman, only for him to take a dark turn himself.
If you know the plot of the comics story, then the movie trailer’s plot seems to be very similar. We see Arkham blowing up and villains escaping. We also see a weary Batman fighting Bane, although we all know it won’t end well for him. The trailer seems to also tease later movies, so we get glimpses of Nightwing battling with Jean-Paul Valley’s Batman armor.
The Animation of ‘Batman: Knightfall’
What is super cool about this film adaptation is how much they seem to take from the source material. The movies features Batman characters in their 90’s look. So we get Bane in his luchador one-piece with suspenders, a Batman that visually looks like a cross between Jim Aparo and Howard Porter‘s designs, and Nightwing with the yellow and blue costume and ponytail.
Additionally, we are also going to see villains that were from 90’s-era rogues gallery, like the Tally Man. Like, here we are in 2026 and we’re getting the film debut of Tally Man- the villain who dresses like a 19th century judge. This truly is one of the best gifts that the DC Animation studios has given us.
Also note that the animation style looks revamped from the last DC superhero Animated feature: Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Crisis movies were a part of their shared universe of DC hero adventures called Tomorrow-Verse. The Tomorrow-Verse’s animation style had a very flat, cel-shaded look. While it was an interesting style, it also came off as very unenergetic.
This new animation style for Knightfall seems to take more from the smoothness of Japanese anime. Just look at Bane’s Venom transformation sequence. It looks so fluid. Additionally, the 90’s art comic book art style inspired the animation. There are some impressively deep black shadows for some of these sequences that really mimics Kelley Jones’ Batman art.
No specific release date yet, but Batman: Knightfall Part 1 is expected to come out sometime in late 2026.
