‘Flash’ Writers Divulged a Different Version of Batman from the Movie

Flash writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein revealed the Batman they initially conceived is different than what was seen in the final film.

In an interview with The Playlist,  Daley and Goldstein said that the Bruce Wayne in the Flash movie was originally supposed to be a Wayne that never became Batman.

An element of [Barry Allen] and his slightly younger self embarking on the journey together. Everything else was kind of different. We had a version where Bruce Wayne never became Batman. And so he was just this sort of billionaire party boy who’s aimless and doesn’t know what to do with his life. And we love the idea of sort of thrusting him into a hero position. That is not in the film. They made it Michael Keaton’s Batman. So not a lot survived.

How an ‘Aimless’ Bruce Wayne Could’ve Changed ‘The Flash’

That could have been a fun experience where Barry Allen Flash would have had to mentor an untrained Bruce Wayne into Batman.  It could have been an interesting inverse of their typical Batman-teaching-the Flash relationship. However, maybe the idea was dropped because it would have been too redundant of a plot beat.

That would have meant the main Barry would have to train a younger version of himself to be the Flash, as well as Bruce to Batman, and also-also an alternate version of Kara into Supergirl. When framed like that, it probably makes sense for the script to change Batman into the hyper-competent version ultimately seen in the film.

It seems that at some point, either the studios or subsequent rewrites changed the premise to Michael Keaton’s Batman.  Christina Hodson rewrote the script after Daley and Goldstein finished their draft.

While it is unclear if the writing duo will return to the DC universe, Hodson is currently writing the script to Brave and the Bold. Hodson also previously written for Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey.
