Writer Rick Remender revealed that DC offered for him to write Batman.
In a fan AMA over on League of Comic Geeks, Remender reported how he was offered some of the Absolute titles, as well as the mainstream Batman title. However, Remender has not had a passion to right established franchise like Batman. In fact, Remender went on to say how he prefers the more weird concepts in comics.
“It wasn’t that hard to turn down those jobs. It would’ve been good money, and money is nice, but my heart simply isn’t in it. It feels like playing cover songs to me. There are a few IPs I’d still get excited for, but they are oddball things.”
How oddball are we talking about here? Remender said that he’d be interested in the Darkstars- aka that space-faring group that has a rivalry with the Green Lantern Corps.
“I don’t really want to write other people’s characters, but if I had to pick one, I’d say I would fix Darkstars for them. Then I’d be really hurt when they made a movie and didn’t involve me. Then I’d swear– never again, Satan!”
Whatever the case is, Rick Remender seems satisfied with his creator-owned work for Image Comics. However, it seems unlikely that Remender will return to Marvel Comics. He reported that his time at Marvel were “…some of the unhappiest of my life. It’s just not a great fit for me.”
Remender was best know for his Marvel work. This includes Uncanny Avengers, Uncanny X-Force, and Captain America– where he graduated Sam Wilson to the role of Captain America. Currently, Remender has been working with Image Comics. He is writing multiple titles, including Escape and The Seasons.
