It has been 30 years, but the public can finally see the Batman Forever: Schumacher Cut with a big caveat.
The director’s cut of the 1995 film is hitting theaters. Well, theater… singular. One movie theater in Los Angeles- the Cinefile- will screen the Schumacher Cut of Batman Forever on Thursday May 29th. Even then, the Cinefile will only screen the movie to their monthly members, making it even more limited.
An Extremely Limited Run
The Bat-fans who are lucky enough to catch the screening will be among the select few to see the director’s cut of the movie. A small group of viewers got the chance to see Schumacher’s director’s version of Batman Forever back in 2023. Later, film director Kevin Smith also hosted a private screening at Smodcastle Cinema in New Jersey. Until then, that was about it.
Keep in mind that viewers of the director’s cut will not see a fully completed film. The new scenes are missing a lot of visual effects and a musical score to make it a fully seamless viewing experience. According to Forever screenwriter Akiva Goldman, it would only require 1 million dollars to clean it up. Goldman also reported that Warner Bros. was originally going to invest the money into completing the movie. However once Discovery bought Warner Bros, the project closed.
What Scenes Will be in the ‘Schumacher Cut’?
Reportedly the movie got very positive praise for its deliberate pace and deeper exploration of its psychological themes. This version of the film has a run time of 2 hours and 38 minutes, which is over 35 minutes longer than its theatrical cut predecessor. The theatrical cut came in at 2 hours, 2 minutes.
Schumacher’s original version featured more backstory of Bruce’s involvement of the Wayne’s murder, Bruce getting temporary amnesia, Two-Face violently escaping from Arkham Asylum, and the vision sequence where Bruce confronts a giant bat creature.
Will this one screening open the doors to more public access to the movie? One will hope Val Kilmer’s recent death will maybe spark interest in the movie again.
